In 2021, Germany officially recognized the Herero and Nama genocide for the first time. The word “genocide” was finally, formally used.

That moment didn’t come from nowhere.

“Mama Namibia will always be remembered as the book that opened the door so Germany could never again hide from what it had done to our families all those years ago.”

Those are not my words. They are the words of the Herero community – the people I was honored to write for and about. I received them with more gratitude and more weight than I can describe.

The reparations negotiations are still ongoing. Germany’s €1.1 billion pledge remains largely unfulfilled. Justice is not yet complete.

But a door was opened. And books – fiction, of all things – sometimes open the doors that politics keeps locked.

Mama Namibia is available in English and in German. Because this story belongs to both nations.

What book first opened a door to a history you hadn’t known before?
