“Child, save yourself. Run as far from here as you can.”
Someone said those words to a child in 1904. Knowing they might not follow. Hoping they would.
Jahohora ran. She stumbled through the Omaheke Desert for nearly two years. She was starving. She was alone. She was 12 years old, then 13, then –
She made it.
The fact that you’re reading this, and that her story exists in Mama Namibia, is because Jahohora kept running. She and others lived to tell it. Their descendants kept the memory alive for over a century, until I was entrusted with it.
Survival is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of the responsibility.
This is Remembrance Day. The memory doesn’t end today. It keeps going.
What does remembrance mean to you personally — what do you actually do with it?
